Since he was a teen Jamieson has been reading and writing free-verse poetry. When he reached retirement he taught himself to write in rhyme and meter. His major formal models were Shakespeare’s dramatic verse and Robert Frost’s poetry, among others. To his astonishment, he found meter and rhyme liberated and expanded his range of feeling and imagination more than any skill he had ever learned. He now writes exclusively in them. “It’s great fun to tailor-make a poem for a person I have come to know, and can relate to, even through correspondence,” he says. “Many of the poems I write are written for someone whose special images and personal experiences I’m able to find contemporary words to express. “Nothing satisfies me more than when a poem written for them brings them pleasure and delight with a surprising rhyme. Give a Poem patrons are fun to write for because the verse can delight both the recipient and the giver.” Jamieson lives in East Hampton, Connecticut, USA, where he is currently working on his second book. Why not take a look at Jamieson’s poetry. If you like it, feel free to get in touch with him. |
